CALD WORKSHOP: I am here in the land of food, that what I’d like to call Taipei, Taiwan, cloggers from CALD family meet again for 4 days workshop with the theme ‘Political Communication in the Digital Age’.
This whole thing is a very new experience for me and I am very exited to be part of this workshop. I am also aware that the internet is one of the most precious and difficult things you can have in my country, Burma.
Countries like Korea or Taiwan, majourity of the people use internet or perhaps emails as part of their daily life. But, and it’s a big BUT, country like Burma, even to set up a basic dial-up connection cost US$ 500. For broadband connection, it will cost US$ 3000 for initial set-up. For ordinary people in Burma, it is way way out of question.
Would internet and email be so expensive and hard coded technology it is never be a public tool for communication in Burma? I think there was a time that yahoo and google exist for rich market and privileges who can afford. Needless to say that to make it all happen we need electricity to hook them up altogether. Isn’t it? In Burma, even in major cities, electricity is not distributed on regular basics to ordinary but to the leaders military junta and it’s cronie’s areas.
So, we will have to do it hard way to reach to the level of our neighbouring countries in this digital age. I will of course try my best and will share what I learned from here to my colleagues when I get back to Thailand.
Oh oh! One last thing, please do not forget to sign our online petition on www.unscburma.org
Thanks very much! Soe Aung
